Boeing-Hawker de Havilland Risk Management
19 July, 2006
Hawker de Havilland, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boeing, has acquired the first commercial licence for the Intelligent Risk Exchange (IREX) system from Hearne Scientific Software.
IREX is a web based risk management system for organisations working on large scale projects spread across multiple sites with multiple work groups. The intelligence built into the system uses the lessons learnt from previous projects to help project managers to identify, assess, and monitor potential risks associated with their projects. IREX links the entire project management process from design and development to construction and delivery.
"Hawker de Havilland now uses IREX to manage risks in a variety of complex multi-disciplinary engineering projects such as the manufacture of aircraft components for the new-generation Boeing 787 Dreamliner", - Dr. Adrian Rispler, Engineering Operations Manager, Hawker de Havilland.
Hawker de Havilland is designing and building trailing edge control surfaces such as the flaps, ailerons and spoilers for the 787 Dreamliner. Hawker de Havilland has offices at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne and Bankstown in Sydney and is a major sole source supplier of aero-structure assemblies to the world aircraft industry, exporting its manufactured products to the USA, France, UK and Canada.
Hawker de Havilland has an enterprise wide commercial license for IREX enabling all staff members to access the system via a web browser.

Official handover of IREX to Boeing-Hawker de Havilland
Present at the official handover of the IREX system to Boeing-Hawker de Havilland were (left to right):
- Mr Tony Carolan (Boeing-HdH, General Manager Business Development)
- Mr David Galvin (CRC-IMST, CEO)
- A/Prof. Berman Kayis (UNSW, CRC IREX Project Leader)
- Dr Mingwei Zhou (CSIRO, IREX Project Leader)
- Dr James Hearne (Hearne Scientific Software, CEO)
- Mr Yong Bing Khoo (CSIRO, IREX Lead Programmer)
- Dr Adrian Rispler (Boeing-HdH, Engineering Operations Manager)
- Mr Miro Miletic (Boeing-HdH, General Manager Engineering & Quality Assurance)
The IREX system was developed within CSIRO as a result of four years joint research and development by a dedicated team of researchers from CSIRO, University of New South Wales (UNSW), University of Wollongong, and Boeing-Hawker de Havilland who collaborated through the Co-operative Research Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Technologies.
The CSIRO team is currently collaborating with Hearne Scientific Software to further develop the software to address a broader range of projects in various engineering and service industry sectors. Mr. Yong Bing Khoo, CSIRO's computer scientist who leads the development, said that with the model-driven knowledge-based approach IREX can be quickly tailored to capture individual company's corporate memory and its risk policies.
All matters regarding the licensing of IREX are handled by Hearne Scientific Software. Contact Hearne Scientific Software for further information.
