Mathcad 14

Licensing Options

Single-User Standalone Licensing

Single-user standalone licenses are suitable for individual users and can only be installed on one computer. Single user licenses cannot be transferred to other individuals, even within the same organisation. Organisations are advised to select an Enterprise Licensing option (see below) - these licenses can be transferred to other staff members.

Single users receive 30 days of technical support. They are not eligible for subscription to the PTC Global Maintenance Support Program and as such do not qualify for technical support after 30 days or maintenance releases. When new versions of Mathcad are released, Single users may optionally purchase upgrades. Single users may also upgrade to an enterprise license if they would like maintenance and support benefits.

Enterprise Licensing Options

Enterprise licenses include the initial 12 months subscription to the PTC Global Maintenance Support Program which users can subsequently renew on an annual basis. The Add-on Collection is also included free of charge.

The Enterprise Licensing options available include:

Node-locked Licensing

Node-locked licenses are activated using a license file stored locally. Users of node-locked licenses are also entitled to one home-use license for each node-locked license purchased. The home-use licenses are valid while the maintenance policy is active and are for use within the homes of the users of the node-locked licenses.

Floating Licensing

Floating licenses are allowed to float across a local area or wide area network. The software is not restricted to designated users or PCs however the number of PC's running Mathcad at the same time cannot exceed the number of floating licenses purchased. For example, a 5-user floating license may be floated across a network that supports 50 employees, giving anyone access to Mathcad, but only five users can use it at the same time. The license manager for Floating licenses is FLEXnet.

If your installation has an active maintenance policy, you are entitled to home-use licenses up to twice the number of floating licenses within your installation. The home-use licenses are for use within the homes of the users of the floating licenses.

Floating licenses may not shared outside the country in which they were purchased. Global licenses are available which include the right to use the licenses in multiple geographies.

How the FLEXnet License Management Works

The FLEXnet license manager, which comes on the Mathcad CD, is first installed onto the computer on the network that is designated as the license server or onto the same server where Mathcad is residing. When an end-user launches the Mathcad application on the client machine, the following steps take place:

  1. The client machine establishes a connection to the license server, where Mathcad license information is stored.
  2. The client machine sends a request to the license server for permission to run the application.
  3. The license server determines and validates if there are any licenses available, based on the contents of the license certificate file, and sends a grant or denial message back to the end-user.
  4. If a license is authenticated, the end-user is free to use Mathcad for any length of time.
  5. Once the Mathcad session is over, the license is returned to the server.

All Mathcad related calculations and processes are run locally on the client’s machine, so network traffic and resource use is minimised.
