Hearne Scientific Software is now a member of the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate citizenship initiative with 2,900 business participants and other stakeholders located in approximately 90 countries.

In an address to the World Economic Forum on 31 January 1999, United Nation Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged business leaders to join an international initiative – the Global Compact – that would bring companies together with UN agencies, labour and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles.

Hearne Scientific Software supports the ten principles of the Global Compact in respect to human rights, labour rights, the protection of the environment and anti-corruption. Furthermore, Hearne Scientific Software is committed to making the Global Compact and its principles part of the companies overall strategy, culture and day-to-day operations.

In 2005 Hearne Scientific Software received the community iAward from the Australian Information Industry Association. Hearne Scientific Software received this award for its work with CSIRO Entomology in developing the Climex and Dymex software. These programs are used by scientist and researchers around the world to understand and predict the impact of climate change on plants and animals, particularly their current and future distribution.

Recently Hearne Scientific Software and CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology have collaborated to bring to market the AccuRate software. This software is the only energy rating software for residential buildings in Australia that is compliant with the new 2006 building code of Australia. By utilising AccuRate during building design, industry can create more energy efficient buildings and thus reduce the impact of Australia’s built environment on its natural environment.

As a member of UN Global Compact Hearne Scientific Software embraces, supports and enacts, within its sphere of influence, these values;

  • Support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
  • To make sure it's not complicit in human rights abuses.
  • Uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
  • Elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.
  • Effective abolition of child labour.
  • Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
  • Supports a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
  • Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.
  • Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
  • Work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery.

In June 2006 the Australian Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services published a report on “Corporate Responsibility: Managing Risk and Creating Value”.  In this report, the Committee expresses its explicit support for the UN Global Compact, commends those Australian companies that have already engaged, and recommends that the Australian Government encourage other Australian companies to become involved where it is appropriate for them.

As well as being a participant in the Global Compact, Hearne Scientific Software is one of the few technical software companies in the world to be ISO 9001 Quality Assured and an approved supplier to the United Nations.
