Irish researchers at the University College Cork use Intel software development products to optimise high performance cluster computing power.

The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) is a group comprised of researchers from the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and the Department of Computer Science in University College Cork, Ireland. The group carries out interdisciplinary research under the banner of Informatics in areas of mathematics and computing related to information and communications technology.

Among the BCRI's resources is a HEA funded Beowulf computer cluster for high performance computing. The cluster consists of 50 dual processor Dell Poweredge 1655MC servers and runs Debian Linux.

Following a grant from Science Foundation Ireland, BCRI has recently added the Intel C++ Compiler, Intel Fortran Compiler and the Intel Cluster Math Kernel Library to its resources, giving improved performance to the researchers using the cluster. By reducing the time required to run various calculations & simulations, many more researchers will be able to take advantage of the cluster’s computing power.

Tony O’Donovan from BCRI says, “Now that we can also offer the Intel C++ & Fortran Compilers and the Intel Cluster Math Kernel Library, we expect many more researchers to utilise the cluster in the coming months and years.”

Current projects that will benefit most from this software include a project that uses the cluster to solve integral equations which describe the propagation of acoustic wavefields through the human body. Another is concerned with parallel testing of graph properties to find examples of specific graphs. The current research projects on the cluster cover a diverse range of disciplines, with work being done in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ultrasonics, Digital Signal Processing, and Communications Engineering to name but a few.

The Intel Software Development Products are a full suite of tools that can help developers easily create the fastest software possible on Intel architecture. Intel Software Development Products are compatible with the leading development environments available today, and are easy to use with the tools developers are already utilising to tune their software.

Intel's much hyped multi-core and Hyper-Threading processor technology doesn't translate to better performance unless software developers can take advantage of its additional processing power. To enable programmers to develop software that takes advantage of the new architecture, Intel provides the tools to help developers optimise their code.
