The Hearne business was set up in the early 1980's and soon became established as a source of statistical and questionnaire processing software. New programs were added to the range in the early 1990's to create a comprehensive scientific and technical software distribution business, offering various categories of software relevant to scientists, engineers, business analysts and researchers.

The business acquired quality assurance certification, federal government and United Nations endorsed supplier certification and was awarded a number of Research and Development Start grants and awards for exporting technical software.

Hearne continues to successfully commercialise research software. Various programs have already been commercialised, including CLIMEX, DYMEX, AquaRisk, AccuRate, and IREX. These have been developed by researchers and programmers from CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Cooperative Research Centres, ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) and Hearne.

These unique programs are sold worldwide by Hearne working in tandem with an international network of software distributors. CLIMEX alone has already been sold into over 30 countries around the world.

Today, Hearne is a major distributor of scientific and technical software in the Asia Pacific region and its partners include, Oracle, PTC, Cranes Software International, Intel Software Division, SPSS, Wolfram, CambridgeSoft, OriginLab, Adapt Software, CSIRO and other leading software developers.

Hearne provides training in the use of the major programs which it distributes, as well as a range of consulting services related to its programs. It is particularly adept in the areas of technical software distribution, engineering mathematics, risk management, online surveys, project management and commercialisation of research software.

Since entering the technical software market in the early 1980's overall revenue has grown by a compound rate of about 10% per annum. Today there are over 500,000 unique visits to the Hearne web sites each month, generating about 4 million hits per month. Hearne has accumulated a massive database of technical software users in the Asia Pacific Rim, which lays the foundation for continued growth of the business.
